The Moat

We are just 25 minutes walk from the City of Wells (less than 5 minutes by car). On Wednesday and Saturday there is a farmers market in the square which adds to the atmosphere of this charming city. The magnificent Cathedral and the Bishop's Palace Gardens are open to the Public and are our main places of interest. Take in the history in the Cathedral and allow time to relax and reflect in the Bishop's Palace Gardens. Ask us about "half price entry" There are daily guided tours and events throughout the Summer.

Right next door to the Cathedral don't miss the "Vicars Close" which "is claimed to be the oldest purely residential street with its original buildings all surviving intact in Europe. This year celebrating it's 650th anniversary. You might also consider visiting The Wells & Mendip Museum before choosing somewhere to enjoy an evening meal. Walking ;

There are an abundance of countryside walks in and around Wells which include The Monarch's Way and The West Mendip Way. We keep a selection of maps and guide books which we are happy to lend to our guests.

On Market Day in Wells, on Wednesday and Saturday each week, you will find Wells Walking Tours. Re-starting on Saturday 30th March at 11.00am from outside The Crown. These walks will ensure that you don't miss any of the points of interest that Wells has to offer.

The National Trust -

Whether or not you are a member of the National Trust, you might want to consider including a visit to one or more National Trust Properties when visiting Wells. Montecute House was built in the late 16th Centrury and includes a display of more than 60 of the finest Tudor and Elizabethan portraits from the National Portrait Gallery collection and can be found 23 miles south of Dulcote. Barrington Court, Tintinhull Garden and Lytes Cary Manor are just a short drive from Montecute House

The majority of our guests come to Beltane for a short break or to break the journey from home to Devon or Cornwall. However, we are confident that you will be truly surprised at just how many places there are to visit in Wells and the surrounding area. This page aims to give you a taste of the many places that you can enjoy when you choose stay at Beltane whether it is for a short break, or perhaps a longer stay..

The Tor

If you take the walk from Beltane to Wells you will see Glastonbury Tor in the distance. Glastonbury is just 7 miles from Dulcote (10 minutes by car). Glastonbury is home to the World peace gardens "Chalice Well",
Vesica Piscis pool and Flow-form
but perhaps more well-known is Glastonbury Abbey "once the grandest and richest Abbey in England". In the town itself you will find a selection of shops, many selling books, crystals and mystical objects.

A short distance from Glastonbury is Clarkes Villagein Street where you will find loads of famous brands not just Clarks Shoes.

Gardens to visit

Not very far away from Beltane is Milton Lodge Gardens, just 1/2 a mile north of Wells. From the A39 Bristol-Wells turn north up Old Bristol Road, the views from Milton Lodge over Wells are one of the main attractions.

Kilver Court Gardens

Highly recommended too is "Kilver Court Gardens" , which is located in Shepton Mallet, about 4 miles from Dulcote.

Nearby Activities include ; Golf at Wells Golf.

For train enthusiasts there is the West Somerset Railway at Minehead for travellers coming from or going to Exmoor.

Beltane is within comfortable driving distance of Longleat and if arriving via the A303 or Wiltshire, Stone Henge, Avebury Stone Circle and Sailisbury Cathedral are not too far away

The City of Bath, proclaimed a World heritage Site in 1987 is 20 miles North East by road from Dulcote via the A37. A spa City named Aquae Sulis by the Romans, boasts a wealth of Georgian architecture crafted from the distinctive Bath Stone.

Events for 2013

Watch a flock of starlings form a Murmuration before breakfast!
Every year in February, Somerset starlings flock together over the Somerset Levels & Moors to create huge and magnificent starling murmurations.

Shepton Flea Market Sunday July 21st, October 6th and December 8th 2013. The largest flea market in the South of England. over 800 stalls.Located at the Royal Bath and Wells Showground which is a short drive from Wells.

The next International Antiques and Collectors Fairantiques event will be held on the 5th, 6th and 7th July 2013 at the Royal Bath and Wells Showground.

are the dates for the Royal Bath and West Show
26th June - 30th June 2013
sees the return of the Glastonbury Music Festival

15th November 2013 - Wells Carnival


Beautiful and nationally protected, the Mendip Hills is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty

 

Wookey Hole is less than 4 miles from Dulcote where you can explore the caves and enjoy the fun! Enjoyed mainly by children, Wookey Hole caves are definitely of archaeological interest. Ask us about discounts for 2013

Don't miss Cheddar Gorge which is truly spectacular, You can just marvel at the magnificence of the Gorge (for free) or explore the caves and sample Cheddar Cheese which has been matured in the caves.

Lesser known Ebbor Gorge, which is owned by the National Trust can be found close to Wookey Hole Village and Caves. It is a steep-sided ravine cut into Carboniferous Limestone. There are a variety of walks and amazing views of Somerset from here.

For some Nostalgia visit the "East Somerset Railway" at Cranmore where you can enjoy Cream Teas, Sunday Lunch and off course Steam Trains.

The Royal BATH & WEST Showground is located just 6.5 miles away in Shepton Mallet, home to various events throughout the year including the "National Gardening Show" which is held in September.

Each November there is a Carnival in Wells and the surrounding towns.

Hot Fuzz

In Hot Fuzz "Sandford' was actually England's smallest city, Wells. Much of the action was filmed in Market Square and around St.Cuthberts church
